    Gun Safe Remodel

So, GhostSkull graciously gave me an old gun safe he had sitting in his garage for a while. I’ve never had a gun safe and keep most of my guns hidden throughout the house.

The only thing about it is the lining had deteriorated so he ripped it out.. I’m looking to do a live remodel but wanting to ask the GS some opinions..

I’d like to get/build gun rests on the sides for my shot guns and rifles like you’d find in a regular gun safe. I’m just trying to figure out how to do this. I then plan on covering it with some indoor/outdoor carpet.

I’ve come up with a couple of ideas for the gun rests and would like to see what y’all think would work best. I’m am limited on $.
I’ve looked online for gun safe accessories and the only thing I could find were pistol holders or door racks.

    Here’s what I’ve come up with so far;
Jigsaw out in a 1x2 notches for gun rests and mount on the side

Use fishing rod holders and mount on the side, I can’t find any big enough to hold a barrel tho.

Use foam or egg crate foam for the sides and don’t worry about the notches.

Cut a pool noodle or pipe insulation in half and secure with spray adhesive before covering with carpet.

I’m not really worried about the inside of the door.

Attached are a couple of pics of the safe. What do you think?

My honest opinion is that you’re over thinking it. Put carpet inside and be done. You don’t have much room for rifles and such with those drawers in the way.

I’d say invest in a bunch of gun socks, put one on each long gun or shotgun. This will
Keep them from getting scuffed or scratched.

I’ve done this when I had a smaller safe. I could fit more long guns without the racks. Just gently set them in there and have them leaving on each other . Scoped guns in a smaller safe really limit how many you can fit

              I'd do this

Organize your gun safe with the Rifle Rods gun rack system to store more guns.

Whatever you do, on a safe that small make sure you bolt it to the floor or wall or both. As a police officer/detective for 12 years, I’ve seen much bigger and heavier safes taken full from houses simply because they could easily be thrown on a dolly and wheeled out or tipped and picked up byba couple guys. Never seen one that was bolted ripped out, although I know it happens.

Take a 1X6, use a 2" hole saw to drill holes down the middle as close together as you want your guns, then rip it right down the middle to have two "barrel holders". I've done it and it works. I would try take those drawers out though.

This is what I do, then just stack them in there as tight as I can. You'd be amazed how many guns you can get in one safe.

I have a very similar safe I bought 25 years ago and I recently refurbished it. I made barrel holders similar to the way Dale described above. I attached them to the walls with heavy-duty double stick tape. The walls were originally lined with some kind of thin foam which had deteriorated so I replaced it with carpet. I also installed a LED "tap light" which helps because it is in a rather dark closet. BTW it is attached to the studs with lag bolts. It is also advisable to put in in a corner with the hinge side of the door away from the wall. That makes it harder for someone to get a crowbar in the lock-side opening and pry it open.
