    Cottonseed Storage

In the past we have purchased big sand bags from U-line that can hold up to 1,500lbs. We have had them for three seasons now and all of the handles have ripped off so we cannot use the fork lift on the tractor to load in then into the bed of our trucks any longer. What are you guys using to store your cottonseed? We will be getting around 4,000lbs at a time. Just curious if any of you do anything to store it until you use it.

We leave it in the pasture as is. Will develop a protective "crust" and good for a long, long time.

We had 20,000 pounds delivered. Was mostly good. The only issue we had was mold etc on the very bottom layer.

But I bet if I placed it on top of gravel so water would drain better it would have worked a lot better.

I built a box one year out of 4x8 sheets of plywood & 2x4s. It held 1 ton.
I used pipes to roll it off the trailer into a shed.

Just dump it on the ground and cover with a tarp. Been doing this for years. Like RiverRat said, the bottom layer will get moldy, but the rest is good to go. How many pounds will you feed in a Year? I'll shoot you a pm.

Put those bags on a pallet if you want to keep using them.

I think we are just going to have them dump it on the ground this year. We have been using the bags too and sometimes they are a pain. Need to find someone that can deliver in bulk to us though, my brother usually picks it up in sinton.

I agree with covering it with a tarp

I really only want 5 tons this time. If anyone is near San Saba that wants to split a load let me know. It's a 10 ton minimum last I checked. Cheaper than corn.

I use these. What farmers get their plantable cottonseed in. I can get about 3000#'s total in the two of them.

We only have 400 acres and currently feed around 14,000lbs of protein a year and only fed 4,000lbs of cottonseed last year. I’d like to increase our cottonseed to around 8,000lbs/year. We lease cattle on our place so if we dumped it on the ground we would have to build a pen around it to prevent them from eating it all.

We put up cattle panels around ours, 40 ft x 25 ft...holds around 12 tons. No tarp needed over it. We feed about 6-10 tons per year...
