    Fireplace education needed

Okay guys bottom left side of my fireplace is this switch. I can’t tell a difference in air flow/ draw weather it’s up or down. I’m extremely curious as to what it does. You can feel something behind the fireplace move when you move the lever. Anyone got any info?

Pretty sure it’s a fresh air draw. When it’s open, your fireplace can draw from a vent to help it draft better. That’s very similar to my fireplace and that’s what my manual calls it. I have not ever noticed a significant difference but the builder said they have them because the new houses are sealed much better than older homes.

Probably what it is. You might just light up a piece of newspaper and see if either position will tell you something.

          First

You will notice a difference mainly when starting the fire before the chimney is hot and draws

Mine looks identical except it says open on the bottom. If it’s the same down is open.

I have a Heatalator (sp) fire place insert and down is open for the vent.

heatalator, draws warm air up and thru dead airspace between the flu tiles and the chimney, and then the vents disperse it...it think.

so it's just a fan motor switch...I think.

Thats definitely your fresh air vent. Down position should be open.
