One hard rule for business managemnt is never terminate an employee on a Friday afternoon. Let alone do it by an email. Prayers up for a new and better direction.

I think it is for the best, when one door is closed, another is opened. I would not hesitate to try and go back to the county, providing you have a good relationship with the Sheriff, you never know what might come of that avenue?
Now, if the Sheriff and DA are in bed together, that's a different story. I've only seen that 2 times though.
a former 26 yr old boss of mine hired his best friend, his new wife, and the one mexican ranch hands 16 yr old son within a span of a week. i was the only other hand. i had been there 7 months. i was let go via text message during the same week. his dad was the owner of said ranch and made him boss due to being to stupid to do anything else on his own. couple of the biggest chicken ****s ive ever met in my life
Just an FYI, even though HR called you, you need to get the termination in writing for your future files. I just spoke with my best friend, he is an Assistant DA, Chief Civil side and he mentioned that fact. He brought up the abandonment term and said that can be customary when a newly elected official takes office. They can prove abandonment by claiming you didn't show up to work for the new official and perhaps deny any benefits.
As you stated, it's part of working for an elected official but they should have done this all prior to the last day of the year. This will create a nightmare for HR but that is not your problem.
Many future employers should understand your situation but some young HR directors will not understand the politics at play in your line of work for an elected official. I would try to get a letter of reference from your last boss and maybe even one from the HR director.

Thank you for the heads up. I’ll get a formal termination notice tomorrow I believe
Happens all the time when newly elected officials come in office. Had a friend in Beaumont that worked for a Constable. The new one fired the entire staff.
Many openings for LEO in your part of the country. AG's office in Houston has many opening.
I got laid off once and they didn't even tell me. A big group was laid off but I was out in the field working and nobody called me in. Later that evening I noticed my email not working so I called the help desk who told me I was on the list. Someone from HR called me at 7PM to apologize that I was not notified and told me I had to come in and sign the paperwork and get my check. I told them I was not driving across town at 7PM because they forgot to call me. They said I had to because the paper work was already done. Obviously they had to re-do the paperwork and cut another check when I went in the next day.
