    Taxidermy Question ASAP. Thanks!

Having to cape this aoudad on hillside in a canyon. Can I split the hide up the back bone? Will a taxidermist be angry for having to stitch the whole back up or is that how they do it on these nasty critters? I assume so in order to get around the big head and horns. Thanks

Call your taxidermist and ask. But I wouldn’t.

no...just roll the cape towards the horns and skin it that way (like a sock).

I do all my animals like that, I don’t gut anything. All my mule deer and elk are killed on mountains where you have to quarter out. My taxi doesn’t care. Start at the base of the skull and cut with the hair not against it! So base of the skull to where you made that belly cut! Then skin from there tube out legs. It also keeps dirt and stuff off your meat cause you can quarter it side by side. Good luck!

            No need to split it

I think that’s standard procedure for big animals killed in the field like that. The hide on an aoudad neck is so thick you can’t just easily roll it over the head like a whitetail; even if it’s hanging.

              Congrats again, Hunter!

Make the normal cuts and peel it up. For a shoulder mount. If you are doing a 1/2 life size then go ahead and split down the back.

An elk is understandable and most I get in are split. It's not that hard to do a mule deer without splitting him all they way. Most I get in are not split. And I hope you aren't splitting whitetail and everything else? I promise your taxidermist doesn't like that.

You must not have killed any animals where ya can’t drive a truck or atv or anything to have you? The op is in canyon where he isn’t going to drag out that animal and get to a skinning rack. That’s why he is doing it in the mountain. So how are you gunna roll the cape up without getting dirt and crap all over your meat? That’s why we split are animals down the middle so I can quarter it out one side the switch and do the other. It keeps your meat clean. Go to any western taxi and I bet he will have a 90% where his animals are split. He better not mind I don’t pay him a lot of money to byatch cause he has to do some sewing. And I do it in every animal I have to pack out! Whitetail, mule deer, elk everything. Congrats op! crack it down the middle brother I’ll give ya my taxi name he don’t mind!

I agree if you can not split it then don’t. But why would I work way harder to cape and clean my animal to save my taxi a little sewing work.. makes no sense. The op is in a canyon with a ram on the ground you really gunna try and roll a cape?
