    Counting points

Curious what everyone's method is to counting points? There are those who count every little bump around the base. Then those who only count main frame points. Myself who counts all points greater than an inch. The hang a ring on it folks.

Showing my buck to a fellow hunter, he thought I was crazy for calling my buck a 12 point instead of a 14. The other two points were not an inch long, so I don't count them. Another aquaintance of mine was telling me about a 22 point buck he killed. When I seen it, I only counted ten points out. He proceeded to count each little tiny bump out, reaching 22. We had completely different understandings of what constitutes a point.

So how do you count your points?

Inch long at least, per TPWD handbook I think. That’s at least how I count them.

If they aren’t scoreable points they don’t count in my opinion.

For scoring purposes: To be counted a point, the projection must be at least one inch long, with the length exceeding width at one inch or more of length.

Anything else we just consider an old ring hanger.

        To each his own.

1 inch. I am a scorer and kind of OCD about it. Lol

I use the one inch way, but offer the hang a ring on it way. My first buck is a 10 point that broke off 2 kickers that I have no idea how long they were and another kicker that is about ¾". He probably has over 100 (too many to count) little bumps on his bases. When people ask, I say he's a 10 point unless you count the one that you can hang a ring on, then he's an eleven. I let them decide. I've never heard of anyone counting the bumps as points.

Has to be at least an inch to be a legal point. I see no reason to count them any other way.

So you can have more! Just kidding, I'm in the 1 inch to be legal camp too.

One inch is the only way I’ve ever seen it done. If it scores it counts if it doesn’t score it doesn’t count. About as easy as it gets.

I agree on the 1" for the most point. But a lot of times I'll describe a buck as a mainframe 8 or 10 with kickers. If I'm describing it that way i don't count every bump but I may count the hang a ring on it bumps as included in the kickers category.

This right here. Main frame x with kickers and kickers are anything that I can hang a ring on. Or I will preface the conversation with x scoreable point but y if you include the one you can hang a ring on. But I don't get all tied up in scores anyway.
