    Ceramic Tile Install ????

Recently our lower floor flooded due to a cracked fitting on a toilet. We woke up to 3-4 inches of water downstairs. The wife & I got all the water up & the restoration company removed the laminate wood (formal), carpet (din), and linoleum (Kitchen & bathroom). They left a lot of backing & adhesive from the linoleum. We are thinking about putting ceramic tile on everything downstair. I asked about them cleaning up the remaining stuff from the linoleum, and they are saying they can install the ceraminc right over that, so there is no need to finish getting everything up , unless we go back with linoleum.

I have done several small ceramic tile jobs before, but I either went straight onto concrete or concrete board. I'm actually thinking about doing my floors now. We were allowed about $9500 from insurance on the floors, and the restoration company is wanting about $14000 to install it. (833 sq ft)

Does everything need to be removed from the linoleum to install the new ceramic tle on? Thanks for any suggestions

For my own house I'm using Schluter Ditra underlayment between my slab and the tile.

$14,000 for 800sf of tile is outrageous! What tile did they include for that price, tumbled cararra marble?

just call an actual flooring contractor to do the work....they will be more likely to do it right and lots cheaper too.

800 sq ft is a lot of tile to lay after work and on weekends. You really need someone to do it. But $14k seems high, even if it includes tile price. They are gonna hire a contractor and Mark up 10+%.

        .....and God Bless America.

I laid tile in our kitchen and both baths after removing linoleum. That was about 12 years ago without an issue.

If you don't want to mess with it my wifes uncle does remodels, lives in magnolia and speaks english

It is ok to lay ceramic over the vinyl (linoleum). Floor installer did it this way in my first house! I had the same question as you. His response was it will be fine, it’s on a slab.

Wow, $16.80 sqft. That is way to much money imo. We had tile layed at $2.50 sqft and about $5 sqft for the tile and I thought that was high.

You didn't say what area you are in but down here near Houston tile guys get between $2-$4 per sf for install only. You should be able to get a quality job with linoleum scraped up, a good float, underlayment and a fairly decent replacement tile included for under $7,000.

That price is insane. Like the guys said above, I'd expect $2.50-4/ft install and they supply thinset. Add in your tile cost. If you pay premium price, Id expect them to use some type of tile leveling system, self level the concrete, ditra, etc.

Glad you called someone else. Was it significantly cheaper? And what did they say about the linoleum? I’m about to redo my bathrooms

They found the same ceramic tile. It is a closeout that retailed for $4.99 a sq ft. They had it clearance at $1.69 a sq ft. They seem to think about $3.75-$4.00 a sq ft labor. 833 total sq ft @ $5.50 = 4581.50. They are suppose to come out in the morning to looks at floors and give written estimate

Seriously. I had 760 sq ft of ceramic tile laid last year for roughly $2800.
