My buddy years ago(back in the 70's) would go there and get off the beaten path and dig musket balls out of the trees, dig up cannon ball and find all kind of cool stuff. not sure you can do that now but I bet if you find the right people it can still be done. I would do some battle field forum searches.

Since you did Normandy, you should make sure you see the Pickett's charge area--from both sides, and Joshua Chamberlain's defense at Little Round Top that saved the Union's bacon. He is my "hero" from the Civil War--here's a great book on him--
