    Kestrel- nope, Cooper’s hawk

While out poking around in the country today we found a kestrel with a bum wing. Got within about 4 feet and took a couple of phone pics.

Thought about catching him for that purpose, but it was about 40 degrees and that tree hung out over a tank of unknown depth.

I don't think that's a kestrel, looks more like a juvenile Coopers Hawk. Kestrel are tiny and have distinct facial markings and brown eyes.

Young Cooper's makes sense, alright. Fooled by the smaller size, but now that we're home and can look at the pic, I agree.

Yikes! No point in risking a polar plunge.....or worse. Good call

neat pics and i agree with the coopers hawk assessment. Hunt in the big country and think the american kestrel is the prettiest bird we have out there.

Definitely Cooper's. I have a pair that hunt pigeons and squirrels from the bird feeder in my backyard. I love them. They are beautiful and efficient hunters.
