    Feeder pen help

I put up feeder pens 10 years ago to feed protein. It didnt go so well. Coons ate most of protein and deer would not jump into pens. I think I used 12 panels per pen. Cows were never a problem but they are on the ranch. I will be building a couple new pens after season. What is some advice you guys can give. What size gap for fawns?

What height panels ? I use hog panels and no problems with deer jumping in. I don't leave a gap for fawns, so can't help you there. Coonhoods would probably solve your coon problem if he makes them for your feeder. Good luck !

Whenever I’ve built a new feed pen, I have always left one panel out for a couple months at first to let the deer have an easy way in and out. Once they know the crack is in the pen, they will jump in to get it!!!!

I’m a cheapskate so I bought the cheaper taller cattle panels over the hog panels. Chopped off the top two rows. Deer jump in, cattle stay out, no hogs jump in. Put three fawn openings in each pen and I guess about 10” opening. Fawns and young deer go right throug. Ocassionaly a few small pigs get in but because momma/daddy can’t they don’t stay long.
I watched a 1.5 year old basket 8 bump the fawn openings and finally got his rack turned just right and wiggled through. Kinda cool to watch.

Go bigger. Bigger the pen and the more natural growth without limiting your shots too bad the better.

I have 16 cattle panels on my main pen. I cut 2 of them down 2 squares to force them to jump In/out where I can get a shot.

All I had to keep out were pigs because they got so bad that the deer wouldn't come around. I used cattle panels cut in half lengthwise. I can step over easily. I used five, so 10 panels.

Bait them in with corn to help them find it.

I have always read that the diameter of the pen should be at least 60 feet, which would be 189 linear feet. Using twelve sixteen foot panels would get you to the minimum. I do not leave a gap for fawns as they could not reach the spouts on my protein feeders. The other suggestion I would have is to make the pens round rather than square or rectangle. One final thought, not all deer will jump in a pen. I had a buck with unique characteristics and out of thousands of game cam pictures in the protein pens, there was not a single picture of that buck. He would not jump into the pen.

Post a picture of your setup. Where the deer eating protein prior to setting up the pens? This is probably your problem. Put the corn slinger in the pen too, and set it to where it slings some outside the pen.

Leave a panel off here and there, and put a few strands of barb wire to keep the cows out. Make sure everything the deer want is in that pen. Corn, water, protein...etc.

Nailed it. Round pens are important. Some deer, bucks in particular, are just too lazy to jump.
