    Naming deer....

Where and how did this all start and why? I heard my buddies naming off names and I felt left out because I didn't know what they were talking about. Turns out it was deer from pictures off of a trail camera. It all sounds confusing. Why not just go with the biggest one you plan on killin and call him "The big buck" or something?

I've also heard one of my buddies say "Yeah this deer is bigger but I don't want to shoot him. I don't have any history with him.".....Did the other one used to come over and play cards and eat dinner at your house or what? I have a good name for the other one.....Truck Smasher. Because that's probably what he's gonna do if you don't shoot him and eat him.

I can't say I've ever shot anything with a name other than what they're known as by everyone. But then again I guess I never asked what their name was before hand. Which would probably only work with a Parrot.

My bad. This would probably get more results Around the Campfire. I'd like to get everyone's input on this strange phenomenon.

I didn't always name bucks but the more serious I got into bow hunting it just kinda happened. I hunt a lot of diff areas both public and small private I was granted permission. I believe bucks can be easily patterned, not in a sense of day to day activities but they use the same circuits year to year like clock work. For this reason I keep a very detailed notebook that I put in any interesting info I can muster both via cam pics and sightings from the stand.

If I just put "the big buck" or 10 pt or whatever it gets confusing as time goes on and u look back in the notebook and wonder what dang deer u were talking about. I don't name every buck, I pick out ones that show potential at a young age. I then proceed to learn as much info about this deers habits as possible. I print out his pic, at which time I name him and put it in the notebook. Underneath pic I write down every possible thing I can about his tendencies. Plus it just makes it more personal and I enjoy it.

Can make it more fun. Easier for a group to distinguish different bucks. A lot easier to say Titan or lucky or whatever than the “big 10 with the crooked brow and crab claws “.

I don't name them because I hunt at my place and only my daughter deer hunts there as well.

If I hunted a lease I could see naming deer being a simplified method of communicating among members.

For example, if I said I think the big 10 needs another couple of years (assuming I had any say ) and the deer I am referring to is a 120-130 3yo and George goes and sits and comes back with a pic of a big 10 that he did not shoot because we said let the big 10 go. Only this 10 is a 190 mature buck that nobody has seen ever and is never seen again.

Looks to me like you answered your own question when you suggested calling (naming) the deer you plan on killing?

My outstanding bucks usually get a name just so my sons can specifically identify which buck I may want them to harvest.

Easy way to track a specific deer year after year. I've been doing it over 20 years, I'll say though when we were young the deer were never named.??

This. Makes it easy to indentify no shoot bucks, management bucks, and so forth. I have files and files of single deer with only pictures of them.

I'd call it that to keep it simple. Then the next deer I saw would be the big deer after it died. I wouldn't worry about Frank,Bill,Bob,Tommy,Jose and Chow Ling.

Trail cameras are nice but I think that keeps a lot of deer from getting killed and guys in the treestand for an unnecessary amount of time with nothing but "history" with a deer to show for it.

This happened when I was 13 or 14. Great Uncle said don't shoot any 10s because one of the hunters jokingly said "Don't let em shoot my big 10"

I shot a decent 10 without counting points(I used to get buck fever real bad and couldn't count points or I'd shake terribly). Folks almost got upset until the hunter cleared it up. The one I shot wasn't seen before, this was before game cams, and was a mature deer. All well in the end.

                        This.

When good deer management is a practice on a property, lots of bucks become "The big 8", or "the big 10".

I bet you're real fun at parties!

Here's a few reasons that come to mind:

It's easier to keep track of certain deer.
                          It's fun.
People out of the loop have no clue what you're talking about.

We name them if they have a particular trait or rack that is easy to identify each year. I have history with a lot of individual bucks at our place, and like to see their progression each year. Been thinking of start a thread on a buck named Scar, that I have watched since he was 2 1/2. Haven’t seen him this year, but he’ll be pretty old for his year if he didn’t die over the summer.

I have folders from each year of each deer that will be on a list of some kind. Either a pass or drop list. That way if some one sees a specific deer it helps identify them per the list they are on.

Its a good management strategy and its fun naming the bucks. I have a good 10 I call Guano because each time I see him I say holy ***** hes big. Another buck we call Gaw for similar reasons. Pics possibly coming this wknd of Gaw as his time has come.
