I need to size the breaker and wire for a 240 volt single phase 5 hp motor driving an air compressor, Looking on line I find recommendations ranging from #12 wire with a 60 amp breaker to #8 wire with a 20amp breaker. I would like to think there is only one right answer per NEC, however, NEC has always been a mystery to me requiring the secret decoder ring. Motor FLA is 19.1. The run length is 45'. I plan to run THHN wire in EMT.
