I've never used a bore sighter. Set a target out at 100 yards. Take the bolt out of the rifle. Place the rifle firmly on a pair of sandbags. Get everything situated to where the rifle will not move on the bags when you take your hands off. Now look down the bore and move the rifle to where you can see the target through the barrel. NOW,WITHOUT MOVING THE GUN, adjust the scope to move the crosshairs to the center of the target. Look through the barrel again to confirm that it hasn't moved. The rifle will now put the bullet on the paper, which is all a bore sighter will do for you.

Taking Scotty's description one step further you can be hitting the bullseye with your second shot. Once you have that first hole on the target, line up your gun so that you are aiming in exactly the same spot as you were for your first shot. Then, with out moving the gun, move your crosshairs to where your bullet hit.

I have sighted in many rifles (all bolt action) looking down the bore and setting the scope. Then I bought a BSA bore sighter at Academy which was about $30. and I have saved several times the cost in ammunition costs over the last 4 or 5 years. Easy to get the rifle on the paper the first shot and it is well worth the initial cost of the bore sighter.
