    Fossils/ artifact Id

been cleaning dirt and rock out of culverts that run under a road and have found thousands of shells , one big tooth and a point. What the heck is this tooth from ? The shells are called Texas oysters according to google, so this was ocean floor at one time. But the tooth has to be from a different time period I’m guessing. It is fossilized and about 3’’ long Click image for larger version

I bet it’s a buffalo tooth. It was most likely in the ground already before the first horses were brought to North America.

You might laugh at this. But I’m going out on a limb and say that it is possibly a camel tooth. I have found them in association with Native American artifacts. Usually very old camps from the paleo timeframe.

Looks like a cows tooth that I find in my pastures all the time, but I’d guess most large omnivores have similar molars

Very possible, would have never thought camels were in Texas

I just read that it is 10 thousand + years old. It takes that long at a minimum for things to turn in to rock

                        That’s a horse tooth.

I'm voting camel, we used to find them in sandbars on the Brazos river between Brookshire/Sealy
