    Axis Hunt Tips

I got the invite to harvest an axis doe or two on a buddy's place but I have never been axis hunting. Any tips/tricks to these mysterious creatures or just chase them like WT?

Would I be wasting my time sitting all day? Or just morning/evening?

I am planning on buying a bag of sweet mix and a bale or cubes of alfalfa to throw out upon arrival and refreshing the pile before each hunt, if needed. Ryan is keeping track of where they've been spotted over the last few weeks so that we have an idea of where to start.

Anything else I can do to increase chances of success? Unfortunately, there is no bowhunting on this property. Rifle only. As such, bought a new rifle/scope. Nothing I had would've sufficed

    Any tips/tricks appreciated.

Definitely work the wind. Find you a high spot and glass. They will be in herds, so find em, and get out in front of them.

Ours seem to be sensitive to vehicle pressure. They seem to know when we pull into the gates. I’ll walk much greater distances to the area I’ll be hunting than I do when whitetail hunting. Spotlighting them is highly effective if you have them on camera regularly at night. Certainly not the most sporting way to kill one, but I’m not above it if I really want to put one in the freezer.

The property is in Blanco. I'm used to hunting FLAT duval county. Will definitely be out of my element. Didn't even consider the different terrain. Whole new ballgame! Though, I'm not sure about the setups. From what I understand, we may be still hunting. No reason we cant spot around during the day, though, right?

My question is, will deer be out and about during the day or do they bed down? Is it dependent on weather?

Not necessarily asking YOU but thinking out loud, trying to fill the gaps between what I was able to read on the internet.

Take this for what’s it worth. I’ve been patterning them for years, free range in the hill country. They’ll come to feed but it’s very dependent on the natural food sources available. If it’s a high fence ranch you can likely find them at feeders on a. Regular basis. If it’s free ranged they’ll still hit the feeders just much more randomly. Things I’ve learned is they always return to a running water source at night i.e. a creek or river and they’ll always return to grazing. So if there’s a field with grass I’d be there come sundown. Good luck.

Great info! Thanks, amigo. It is high fenced so I may be over thinking it.
