    Axis in Late December

I have an axis hunt I have to use by April at Joshua Creek. I have decided I am going to take my son for his birthday on December 28 and let him shoot an axis. When I called to book today they told me that Axis are not plentiful and fully grown out in December. Should I wait until March or April or should I go ahead and give December a try?

I've seen hard horned axis year round....I'd give it a try.

Spring/summer bucks are always the best ones around here. They don’t get killed during deer season. I would wait if i were you. I live close to Joshua Creek. Most of the big velvet bucks will finish out mid to late January.

I would listen to the ranch booking your hunt. There should be hard horned and growing Axis both.

I have hunted Joshua Creek & wait until spring. They shoot the heck out of them from spring until now. Trust me, I was told the same & did not listen & wasted a lot of money with no refund.

I would definitely wait. For big axis seems like the hotter the better. Most will rut May-July near rocksprings

              Good advice above.
I am not an expert but seen more hard horns and heard more roars in early summer.

This seems obvious, but the axis will always be somewhere. They also don't shed and grow antlers in an annual cycle the same way whitetail do. They do have waves, but they also always have some that are hard antlered. They are migratory, so if you're hunting a low fenced place the owner should have an idea when their peak migration is for that place, which will be different than the place a few miles down the road.

The kind-of-but-not-always is what makes axis so interesting.

Joshua Creek isn't lying to you.
