    handgun hunting...

so i recently found out that it is legal to hunt with a handgun in texas... i have a few questions about this. is it the same season as rifle season? is hunting with a handgun limited to certain guns except for rimfire (i already know you cant use rimfire)? is there limitations as to what animals you can hunt with them? ive never heard of handgun hunting unless it pertained to hogs until this year.

google the state's fish and game statutes,go to their website, and ask the real sources. Dont trust forum info for something that can land you in big legal trouble. Bill Wilson, of Wilson Combat gunsmithing in Jonesboro, Ark, can tell you all about it. Bill's son runs the biz, while Bill mostly hunts with a handgun. He lives in TX and hunts all over the world. The last I heard, he was doing so with a .460 Rowland 1911, which hits every bit as hard as a 4" barreled .44 magnum revolver, when the guns are the same length. The 1911 can have a 6" barrel in the same OAL as the 4" n frame, you see. So it picks up almost 100 fps of velocity over what the .44 can offer.

Centerfire handguns are legal on all Texas big game. We’ve been hunting with handguns for years.

that's pretty stilly wording of a statute, since it would let people use .25 autos for deer and hogs. Most have a power level of a certain number of ft lbs of energy, or they say "357 Magnum or bigger", etc.

Probably my favorite way to hunt deer is with a revolver. Hunt any legal game animal or non game animal in Texas that you want.
