Looking for ideas on feeders (its been a while)

Its been a long time since Ive looked at any feeders. I have no idea what is good now days. My Dad and I built 3 feeders 20+ years ago using 55 gallon drums and Spin Caster brand motors/timers. We built elevated platforms for them to sit up on. These motors/timers were very reliable and never gave us any issues. Im now needing 2-3 new feeders for my place. Im not looking for anything super expensive, but I do want them to be very reliable. I live on the place that they will be setup so adding corn and maintaining them wont be an issue. Im not 2-5 hours away like some folks are. Im pretty handy with a welder and a torch so DIY stuff is always an option. Just looking for some ideas on what direction to go. I will be feeding corn year round now and also keeping protein out.

    Any help would be appreciated.

12v stand and fills seem to be all the rage.

Just a quick look around Google shows "stand and fills" for $500-$700.....That's insane. I guess Im gonna be asking for DIY ideas more than "off the shelf" feeders.

That’s what I meant. Study them and build your own.

They can be found for $399. Maybe less for smaller.

Not next to creeks and rivers!

I’m going back to winch up feeders. Can build them pretty reasonable but so can you on the stand and fill. Think there is a thread in building them pretty cheap as well.

A 600# Stand and Fill at Academy will hold 15 bags snd the 6 volt slings pretty good for a 6 voot. Sells for $299. For the money s great buy.

Bought my first stand & fill feeder this year. Don’t think I’ll ever use anything else. Easy & safe!

I have some 55g barrels at the house so it looks like I'll be buying some complete lower units from Elusive Wildlife or similar and just making my own.

I went to stand & fill several years ago. A guy off of TBH made the bases for me. One holds an 85 gallon drum. The other holds a 55 gallon drum. I had the barrels and spinners. I never learned how to weld so this worked out for me.

I have a 55 gallon drum feeder with legs i was using and said heck with it and took the legs off.. now its just on the arms that are welded to the drum. keeps the motor about 6 inches off the ground. ill eventually weld together a mount for it, but its working as it should right now..

Stand and fill are safe and big (prices too)as you want and Depending on size and terrain...can be dragged with atv to new location if its got skids.(get corn level down so its not top heavy or just plain too heavy)

Trevor, your drums will work just fine. Just cut the legs to where you can still reach up to fill them without using a ladder. Mine came out to where the mechanism is about 18 inches from the ground. Build a cage around the motor as big around as the drum and sturdy enough and attached securely enough to detur coons and pigs. Drive Tposts beside each leg and wire them to it (I used those huge pullties like they use for handcuffs and I used Eliminator plates on my motors. That way if animals bump the cage no corn falls out. So far they are working great. Cheers Wayne
