My father and I went on a West Texas Muledeer bowhunt a few years ago and the guide put us in a 1000+ acre pasture that didn't have any deer in it! I got on top of a high point and was able to locate some deer over two miles away!

After it was all said and done, the Guide was more interested in entertaining his son's girl friend that he was putting us on some mule deer!

The food was excellent and the place to stay was great! It was apparent that he hadn't done his homework on what pasture or ranch the deer were actually on!

The Guy's name was Dewayne ______,( cant remember his last name) .

Mike larue still owes 3 of us a guided tarpon trip that was paid for at a DU event.

He rescheduled 3 or 4 times and stopped calling

I've owned a fishing lodge on Lake Fork for the past 25 years. I've seen things.

Got shafted on a goose hunt with Butch’s guide service years ago. Put us with his newest guide that had a dog that would sit or stay. The dog was only a year old but wasn’t trained to say the least. We hunted til lunchtime and only shot one time between 8 guys. That was a hail Mary shot at geese that were 100 yards up. The problem was everytime a flock would come in the dog would get up and run around. The guide would sit up and holler at him to no avail and the birds would fly away. That happened a couple dozen times during the morning until I told him to let’s get outa here. I told Butch about it all and he told me that’s hunting. Said go with some one else if you want another hunt. Said that guy was new and he had no idea of his skills but he’s not liable for his actions during the hunt. Wouldn’t give a dime back. I made sure to get the word out about Butch and this ‘new guide’ and he called once but I told him he should’ve handled it better the first time.

In my experience Larue has been a stand up guy. I wonder if he called off the tarpon trips because of conditions. They can be finicky and definitely harder to get on than trout and reds.

The last time he called to cancel cause he was fishing a tournament in Louisiana. So.....I'd say no

They said were booking only our party but also told someone else that they could come also. Put us in blinds that were just put up and filled feeders just before we got there fit the first time. Never saw an animal for three days. He offered to have us back only to say the area was flooded - yet others had posted they were there. Then when anyone would have negective things to say online would have his buddies post and pretend they were actual customers previously. Also went as far to set up false accounts to post positive comments!

First bad experience and a lesson not to trust some people. These people take advantage of nice people- it’s sad.

Had a couple of guides I went hunting with my son that made my son have a love for hunting! They treated him like a little man and was excited he loved the outdoors- invaluable.

Several years ago, had a real good experience at the West Kerr Ranch. Family owned, operated, and guided. Well run place. Nice facilities. Well organized. Just a good all around experience.

When I moved to Houston in 1998 right out of college is when I started to have a few $ for some guided hunts and fishing trips. It also about the time I found TBH. Pretty much every guided trip I have been one since then was a referral from here. That being said, most have been above average from what I expected. Most times I shot something or caught something and a few times I didn’t, no fault of the person guiding me, I know weather and stuff has an impact on stuff. Only once did I feel shafted on a hunt I got from here and that was a while ago.

Went to a place advertised here about 5 years ago. What I remember is 8 guys driving down there for an axis special and not one person seeing an axis. I also remember sitting in a row of brush blinds all about 150-200 yds away from one another. It was a joke. Glad it was cheap.

Kubusi safaris in Africa was top notch. Great guides, great animals. Best trip of my life.

I've only been on a few guided hunts, some of which were unsuccessful. However, the unsuccessful ones, at least two of them were the most fun of all.

Mule deer hunt in Montana, 163 in. buck on the first morning about 10:00, but not much fun. Outfitter was a crochety old **** who didn't want to leave the truck.

Mule deer hunt in Co. with the only shots fired being coyotes, but camped in tents next to a creek near the Purgatorie River. Every morning I was the first one awake in our tent and as soon as I heard noise from the cook tent I got up and went in to talk to the cook. He was an old guy, (like I am now), and had cooked in cow camps, mining camps, and hunting camps. He was interesting to talk to and he could flat out cook !

Decoying antelope in Montana, my son and I, and just about walked my fat *** off. The outfitter and I probably walked 4/5 miles a day, and I belly crawled a mile or so. My son and his guide probably doubled that. No goats in the cooler, but we had much fun !

Cow elk in New Mexico near Raton on one of Ted Turner's ranches. Four of us went, three elk down right after daybreak. The fourth one was killed that afternoon about an hour before dark. My then 16 year old son made a great shot from 160 yards with his .308 and she never moved after falling straight down. That was nice, but otherwise it was like a drive-by shooting. Can't fault the guides, it is what it is.

Kansas whitetail hunt that I could have killed a couple different bucks, but you don't go to Kansas to kill a 120" buck. Lodge was great, food was good, outfitter was nice, but no bucks. The high point of that trip was scaring about 15 turkeys off their roost right over my head in total darkness. I lost ten years !

The best for last: Whitetail hunt in Iowa with a crooked, lying outfitter. He had nowhere near the ground he claimed to have, put us in the same spots day after day, wind wrong on most sits. I found out about the third day that contrary to what he had told us, we were only legal to hunt does. I should have done better research, that's on me. I thought maybe he had landowner tags until I questioned him a little closer, then he became evasive, so I called the DNR and got the facts. Nevertheless, he lied about that and about how much ground he had, and by the time I had the straight of it, he was headed to the Dallas Safari Club convention to gather some more suckers. We both stopped payment on the checks we had given him for the last half of the hunt price and tormented the bastage until we got the first half back. I turned him into the DNR, but nothing ever came of it. Since then, I've seen him on three or four tv shows with the "celebrities ", which is one more reason not to believe anything I see on those shows.

All in all, I'd say I've had fairly positive experiences on guided hunts.
