Hit or miss for deer. This is definitely a bumper crop year for them all over (at least in Texas and Tennessee).

Deer will usually ignore them if there are white oaks dropping-and they normally are at the same time.

A possum or raccoon on the other hand...

Green ones are the BEST! Take as big a bite as you can fit in your mouth.

Found new little grove of them last weekend, deer weren't using them at all
