Deer will hit peanuts really hard. But before deer season. I once leased a strip of land next to a peanut field. Deer came from miles around to hit that field. But when deer season came... not a deer in sight.

If you have hogs, that could be a BIG problem...

I think you'd have to have some machinery to dig them up. If you didn't, I'm not sure the deer could get to them. The hogs could, though!

even if they are not planted very deep?

Its not the nut the deer crave its the plant. We farmed peanuts in Rising Star for years. There are much cheaper alternatives to planting peanuts and achieving the same results. A 50# bag of peanut seed is going to be around $100. Peanuts are not like wheat and oat seed and has to be treated or it will not germinate.

I would suggest you go with peas. Peas grow very well in sand. Plant a combination of black eye and iron and clay peas.

Hogs will go after anything you plant.

I honestly don't know. I'll be the first to say I don't know much about peanuts. But I don't think it matters how deep you plant them. The plant comes up and branches and produces flowers. Then pods come down from those flowers and enter into the soil and it's from the pods that the peanuts actually form. So I think those pods will just find whatever depth is normal for them to grow, regardless of how deep you planted.

What side of 183? That puts you awefully close to what I call my "***" pasture. Where we go donkey hunting.
