OP, $400 is way less than the going rate as I’m sure you know. That being said, for the LO to go from $400 a gun all the way to $1500 a gun without better explanation, something is up.
Something has changed and he doesn’t want you back for some reason.

What ever you feel or guess he will take. If he knows you, likes you, and trusts you he won't want to look for other hunters that he doesn't know or trust yet.

I'd talk to him ASAP, like today, and get it over with. Say you simply can't afford to pay that much all of a sudden. Tell him you've been rounding up money and can do the $1k per gun or whatever you want to pay.

You already seem to have given up hope so it will not hurt anything. He says no and you still move your stuff.
