In the panhandle on my place no Turkeys have ever been spotted. I have come across 4 hens in the past 3 months. We don't even have many trees for them to roast. The ones I saw were in wide open prairie without any tress in sight. i heard they are making a come back big time all across the US.

I have turkeys show up in December on a little spot I lease, they stay for a couple months but there is no turkey season in that county.

On my buddies place in Duval they had a few come through on occasion but never in any huntable numbers. So, they laid off of hunting them for another few years and now they have plenty to hunt. I suppose if you want to have a huntable population I’d not pressure them for a few years, maybe take one or two a season with your bow until numbers come up.

Mom would bake that sucker and make cornbread dressing with 'em and they were "fittin' ta eat!" Also if you go to the trouble to pick 'em, you can deep fry them whole and they're pretty dang good that way too! When we had our place on the Rio Grande out west, our turkeys were especially tasty because they'd get rolling fat eatin' native pecans in a good wet year... Those years, we always tried to maximize our take 'cause they ate like a store-bought butter-ball! Miss that place for turkey hunting for sure... Killed 40 over the years with my bow!

You can boil a big pot of water and dip the bird in it. The feathers come off a ton easier this way. We do this and burn the few pin feathers off that are left

Setup a couple of turkey feeders with turkey feed or some type of chicken scratch for them. Also be sure and have a water source nearby. If they have these plus some good roosting trees close they will stay in your area. We use to see turkeys only during the spring and early summer on our lease but now I see them year round.

I made some roasted green chili with last springs bird. It was great, looks like pork in the chili and about the same texture. Got a breast in the freezer that will be another batch soon.

We have been covered up with turkeys since Saturday. Anyone know what it would take to get a season in a county without one? I know a warden here local, I may call and ask him...

The thighs are worth saving too, drumsticks are way too stringy on wild birds.

Turkeys move to a winter area and a spring area. Where I hunt they are gone now...
