Me and the GF drove to the lease north of Dryden Friday afternoon. Made it to the lease about 2 PM, got unloaded, filled a couple of feeders, pulled camera cards, and then headed out to drop her off at a stand to try and whack a pig or two. That's when it happened. My UTV, A Diamo 500, started making a roaring sound coming from the rear end. That turned into a grinding noise, but it would go away when I got up to a certain speed. I dropped her off and headed to another stand and the grinding was intermittent. When I got to the other stand I looked at the rear end and the right axle had grease coming out of the differential. Dangit. Headed back to pick her up. The grinding stopped, but i knew the weekend was over.
Saturday, we drove the 247 miles back to Kerrville, picked up my trailer, then drove the 247 miles back to the lease. Needless to say, my left hip which had been replaced in June was killing me. As soon as I turned off the blacktop onto the county road, it started to rain. And I mean RAIN. That road turned into a mudhole in nothing flat. Additionally, the final 4 miles of road had been nearly washed out in some places, making crossing them a real adventure. Fortunately, they weren't full of water but it sure made for some slow going.
The only good time we really had was Sunday morning. I've always wanted to attend an old time, out in the sticks, back country church. Sooo, the GF made some lasagna, we loaded up, cleaned up the camp house, and crept down the road to the Pumpville Baptist Church for Sunday service. If you haven't been to an old two room church with no air conditioning to hear the word of he Lord, you are truly missing out. We were there on a day when they had more visitors than ever and the service had 25 people in attendance. After church, everyone met in the kitchen for a potluck lunch, standard for every Sunday.
They treated us like we were regular members. The fellowship, food, and old time atmosphere made up for all of the weekends difficulty. If you hunt in the Terrell County, west Val Verde County area you need to drop in on Sunday morning service. You will thoroughly enjoy yourself.
You can google Pumpville Baptist Church and see what I'm talking about.
