We took all our gear back to trucks, grabbed a snack and some water (Canadians said no beer until the elk is in the truck), the hiked back up uphill ot fetch the meat.

Kevin and I headed to Longview to drop the meat off with the butcher, while Greg and Ryan went back to glassing to look for another bull for Saturday’s hunt. They found one and actually chased after it, but couldn’t pull it off his cows. We returned and had a “few” drinks and celebrated the team’s success, while dining on a fine Alberta steak dinner. Kevin wore his Shiner Beer shirt he had saved for the lucky day!

                    Saturday 09/22/18

We made an attempt at a last day hunt for elk, but the rain and fog had returned. We checked out of the motel and said our goodbyes to Greg who was returning to BC. Kevin, Ryan and I ran up to Longview in a last attempt for a mule deer hunt. We did glass two, but neither was a buck Kevin or I would want to put a tag on, so we called it a hunt and returned to Calgary.
We called Alexander on the drive into Calgary and he insisted we come over for a Saturday evening supper and catch him up on the hunt. Holding two elk tenderloins from my bull, we let him know we had the main course for him to cook! We had a wonderful dinner, as I was able to dine on my first elk steaks ever and they made had a celebratory cake for the newly minted elk killer!

                      Wrap Up:

As I shared on my TBH thread where I updated daily, “Other than marrying Kendra and having Haley, Cory and Blake I cannot remember a better feeling.” As I type this a week later, I still feel exactly the same way. I have replayed the whole day over in my head at last 50 times since Friday. Hunting elk is as hard as any animal I have pursued and I have dreamed of taking one for a very long time, as it has forever topped my hunting bucket list. At 52 years young, I hope my body has a few more elk hunts in it, as I am just not ready to stop quite yet!

I owe a great deal of gratitude to my Canadian brothers (Ryan, Kevin, Alexander, Jarrett / Charles (who I owe both my mule deer too and the Hartley brothers (Todd and Jeff) who allowed Ryan and Kevin to drag me along to Athabasca for 3 years to chase whitetail! They have all so graciously shared their years of hunting knowledge, while more importantly allowing me into their inner circle of friendship.

While the entire Moseley family are as die-hard native Texans as anyone, we would all happily return back to Alberta. The country is grand and the people are God fearing, hard-working, an as genuine as any you will ever meet. I have traveled a great deal in my career (both domestically and internationally), and can say without a doubt that Albertan’s are as close to Texans as you will find anywhere. We are forever grateful for the opportunity we had to call it home for a short while.

So much greatness, Gary. The joy really comes through in the words and photos, I know that feeling, and I'm convinced it will never be topped until I get to see it in my son's face.

Well played, my friend...and congrats again!
