It provided my wife the opportunity to be a stay at home mom, which was also great. But when you make the money and up your lifestyle then It’s hard to go back. If I did it over again and knew then what I know now, I wouldnt have taken the job. We are slowly scaling back and once my truck is paid off, she should be back at work and I’m leaving my job. Have to work for probably half the money but oh well. I’ve learned money isn’t everything, especially after burning myself out working obscene amounts of overtime. Missing holidays, family events, and ball games is killing me. Some of these times are things you can’t get back.
That’s the thing though, I don’t want it to ruin marriage chances with a very lovely lady. She knows just how determined I am and how hard I work. She likes how driven I am to succeed. But this type job could hurt my future with her and I sure can’t afford to risk that. I may just have to pass on this position. She’s too wonderful to lose.

I did it for 8 yrs. I wouldn’t do it again. Not enough money on this earth to take me away from my family like that again. I think everybody should get a big helping of it though. It makes you appreciate the little things in life.

There are good and bad with shift work. There is a reason why shift workers get payed like they do. And you do miss out on a lot of family stuff but you can make a lot of money doing it. I have been doing it for 20 something years and I do get tired of it at times but you can also do thing that a normal 9-5 day job won’t let you do.

Should apply to LEO agencies. Decent pay and benefits. I only work 15 days a month

I worked shift work for 20+ years. I always like it for the most part. Fishing the bays on a Tuesday or Wednesday is a lot nicer than a Saturday or a Sunday when all the yahoos are on the water.

I've been working it for 25 years..
It has its good and BAD points..
The money and the days off during the week are the only good.
It has provided a good living for my family and I..
The older you get the more you will feel it.. FACT!!
If you have other options I highly suggest that you explore them.

This is the exact advise I gave my son..

I work in a plant but am grateful that I'm straight days. It would be nice to be off during the week more, but you'll end up fishing or hunting alone because most of your buddies don't work shift work or not on the same schedule. No way now I could work shift work. I'm lucky to get plenty of vacation and also have a flex schedule so I can take days off during the week as needed.

It has good and bad like everything else in life. If your woman can't handle your job though maybe you should quit hunting and stay at home. If you are as driven as you say you are you wouldn't pass up any oportunity. Don't mean to bash , just my take on your situation.

I absolutely love what I do as a Senior Lead Operator BUT, the DuPont Schedule (what we work) creates far more problems than never sleeping! If you are in a rocky relationship, it will open many doors of opportunity that will be the end of it. Your overall health suffers greatly too. About the only good things are the work and the pay!

Best of luck to you on your decision. Some really good advice above. If you are in need of the job, take it. I worked shift work for over 10 years of my career. I look back at it as paying my dues. I don’t feel that I could go back to that schedule any more. My overall health now is much better and I don’t feel like I’m putting my body through hell. The schedule has its ups and downs.

Been doing it for about 18 years now( DuPont Schedule). It does have its ups and downs. I have missed so much with the family. I have had to work the last 8 Thanksgiving and only have had two Christmas off in the last five years. Most of the time we have holidays three to five days before or after the actual holiday. The days off are nice if you can get them. You can write your own check out where I work right now. Has been that way for the last 8 years or so. I told my wife that I wasn’t going to work as much O.T that I have in the past and I’m a little over 400 hours right now. We have several guys out there right now that are over 1000 hours. But in the summer time when the wife is off ( school teacher) and the kids are out of school those seven days off are nice an especially if you put any vacation before or after them. It’s hard on the body to.

FD shift work is the best. I work 10 days a month doing the best job in the world. I do miss a lot of family stuff, occasional football game, meet the teacher night, etc. Just try and make it work for the best!
