    Lower Rio Grande- East Lake

Kid got pulled and I’m excited. All he has done is baseball for several years and for a few years was culling at a ranch. Got tired of killing I guess because he has not gone with me in over 2 years. I asked him if he wanted me to put him in for places that had Nalgai and he said yes. He even said he hopes he gets a chance to go and thought we would have fun chasing them.

Question- I know nothing about this place. Do we need to ride in. Good roads? Need bikes, all spot and stalk? Any help from anyone that has been thanks. He just turned 16 so I’m not worried about it being a challenging hunt- The challenge will be me keeping up.

Everyone parks in the same parking lot and you either walk or bike in from there. One main road that goes along the edge of the property and you have to make the decision on how far you want to go in. We almost ran over a big bull in the parking lot itself. Lots of different areas to hunt.

What we did was leave a game cart in the truck and once we killed, went back to get it and dragged animals out that way

Bring a bike and a cart. My boy killed a Nilgai cow and a spike. A lot of work but a lot of fun. We scouted for a day and a half. Scouting paid off.

My 16 year old daughter was also drawn for the 21st thru 23rd hunt. We will be going Wednesday to scout for a day and a half. Sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun.

Should be a good time. Any idea how many total hunters they issued permits to

                  Ten permits per hunt.

Well guess I’ll start getting ready. Think I’m just going to have him shoot a 300 Mag. He has a 30-06 but after reading it almost seems to need a little more punch. Maybe give me an excuse to build a 338 but don’t know why I want one so bad

I killed one last year with my 30.06 and a Hornady 178 Grain ELDX, dropped him where he was standing. Most shots here are 50-75 years in the brush from what I have been told.

So 06 is plenty gun. His likes the Barnes TSX so I leaning on staying with his gun

Had a lot of stuff lined out in shop and kid walked up and said - Let’s just take boots and a rifle. Kinda gonna just run and gun it looks like and still hunt. I’m gonna just take backpacks and maybe two lightweight stools that fit in packs. Not sure what the ranges are going to be but kid is lights out to 300. Gonna be fun to go out and hunt with him again. He had a place where he was killing culls and numbers and he lost interest in hunting for last 2 years.

Best of luck glen! I love a head on chest shot or quartering to just inside front shoulder shot on those critters. Throat patch works too.

Thanks. We will see and at least spend some time together. He is 16 and too busy for his old man most of the time. I think it will be a good hunt reguardless. We may even get lucky and kill a critter
