This trip has been 2 years in the making and finally happened this August. Two friends and I made the trip up to Southwest Colorado to chase velvet mule deer with our bows. Unfortunately there was a bad drought this year that made hunting conditions very tough. Instead of hunting alfalfa fields we were mainly hunting over water. The morning of day 4 we spotted several deer grazing in a field. We speculated they would head to a water hole where we had a pop-up already set up. I made a long walk through some trees and slipped into the pop-up. About 20 minutes after getting settled in I see a solid 2 x 2 coming in. He wasn’t the buck I had came for but given the circumstances he wasn’t getting a pass. I let him settle in and drink at 42 yards. He was quartering to me hard when I drew. I placed the pin right at the base of his neck/shoulder and sent the rage extreme on its way. The arrow hit it’s mark and it looked like a scene from 300! The buck ran about 25 yards and was done! One buddy ended up getting decent buck as well. The other at least ending up zapping a coyote at 84 yards. All in all it was a great trip.
