Finally getting around to getting Wi-Fi in our area. Have been looking at smart thermostats, but there are a few different ones. Seeing what guys recommend and seeing if they are worth the money.

I bought the ecobee with 2 room sensors from Costco. Had it in for about 2 months. So far so good. Was nice to be able to crank it up when we were gone for Labor day weekend, then tell it to come back on when we were headed back home so it was comfortable when we got there.
It also is hooked up to know when it's a particularly hot day coming, and it will start cooling earlier in the day to stay ahead of it. It claims to be slowly learning how the house responds to different forecast temperatures and is dialing in the sweet spot between comfort and energy usage on its own. Our bills have gone down slightly, but I haven't really looked super close at it. That would be a nice benefit, but not the reason we purchased. Our house is nearly 100 years old with single pane wavy glass windows. Efficiency isn't really in our wheelhouse.

On the room sensor's can you specifically change the temperature in one specific room without affecting the other rooms?

Just curious, are you putting these smart units onto older AC units, say 10 years old? I have a good friend that is my AC man, been at it a long time and he said do not go smart style thermostats.
I like the idea of making adjustments before we arrive home or at least a programmable unit but he does not like them. Any input?

I have Nest for both of my units. Upstairs unit is 20 years old. No problem controlling it. The downstairs unit is 3 years old and also no issues. I like being able to control them from anywhere in the world. Especially while on vacation when you realized you left the AC on 72 for a week while you are gone. I can quickly bump it up to 80 and save some money.

There is no problem controlling an older unit with a smart thermostat. I prefer Honeywell. One feature most have is they learn how long it takes to cool the house down, like how many degrees an hour. So you program it to be 74° at 6:00, and it will sample the temperature and bring on the system early enough to get the house at setpoint at programmed time. I caution against large setback splits on very hot and very cold days. If your system has to run several hours to recover from setback, you just used all the power you saved. WI FI stats are great, allowing remote control.
Most pros don't like Nest thermostats. And I can say I have spent a lot of time on the phone with their tech support trying to iron out problems that shouldn't be there.
If you are not familiar with ac control wiring, don't attempt to change your heat pump thermostat. I have had to finish way to many setups.

Had a Nest. Got rid of it. Thought the concept was interesting, it I did not like it at all as it had a mind of its own. Went to a regular old Honeywell stat with WiFi for about $60. Set it and forget it, or get on your app and change the temp from wherever you are. Those $300 thermostats are nothing but a glorified “look at me and what I got!”

I have the nest and going on 2 years with it it works perfectly temperature self adjust to a cool 73* and when no one is home it goes into a moderate setting it learns when people are there and what time it kicks off to start cooling off the house great device once we got it adjusted to our settings it has been spot on without any malfunctions
