My battery tools are all dewalt. I don't use them that hard anymore. I use the 1/4" impact for running screws the most. I see my subs using Milwaukee, the work them hard every day. I picked up a 3/8" ratchet from harbor freight and I like it. would like to get another battery, but on the small projects I have not ran one down yet.

Rigid wouldn't warranty their batteries for us either, nor some of the tools. I called everyone imaginable trying to get some stuff replaced..."it's too old" they told me. Their stuff is too heavy and under-powered compared to others.
I've never been so glad to be rid of something as I was Dewalt power tools, they just wouldn't stand up to what we do.
Makita has been the best of all worlds for us. Light weight (relatively), powerful, and they just keep working. I'd try Milwaukee if I had to switch again, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

I would say that more info would be helpful. Are you using them daily, a couple times a week, once a month, around the house, for work, etc?
I’ve been in remodeling for around 11 years and have used Dewalt, owned makita, rigid, Milwaukee and porter cable.
I was able to have my rigid batteries replaced about 5 years back and it was a little bit of a pain in the butt, but they replaced them. The batteries have failed again sense then though.
I’ve been really pleased with all of them.
My .02 is that if this is something you aren’t going to use extremely often, go with porter cable. My set of those I bought during Harvey, with the intention of letting people borrow them who had flooded and if I didn’t get them back or if they crapped out, so what. I’ve been thoroughly impressed with them though! I got a set that had impact, drill, grinder, circular saw, recipe saw, jigsaw, oscillating saw and a light... all for a fraction of what I’ve paid for my other sets.

How do you distinguish between the big box store cheaper tools and the better grade? I have several local tool specialty stores I can purchase from, but I want to make sure I get the better tool over the HD/Lowes versions. It used to seem that the tools were always upgrading too. I would like to buy, for example the 18v and hope I have a good selection of tools to purchase or add to my collection for several years that will use the same battery/charger..if that makes sense.

If you're just typical homeowner like me,,, and use them on various projects and nothing on a daily basis.. I have 2 of the older 18v HF Chicago Electric Drill and Impact. So far I can't complain and they have done everything I have asked of them. With the 20% coupon they are pretty good deal. I'm told the new ones are even better.
