Third Florida stand your ground case - update

Been following this one for a while. Defense is expertly dragging it out as long as possible for their client, who I think is ultimately going to get convicted of 2nd degree murder.

Curtis Reeves, ex-LEO captain shot a guy in a Florida movie theater over an argument that started when the victim didn’t turn off his cell phone. The guy was apparently texting his daughter during the previews and Reeves got agitated. It escalated and the victim threw popcorn at Reeves who then shot him once in the chest with a 380.

Reeves’ entire defense has been based on Florida’s stand your ground law. His claim was rejected in 2017, and a trial date set for February 2019. However, a change in the stand your ground law may earn him another hearing.

The dude is 72 or 73 and is really just trying to cut the amount of time he spends in prison before he dies there.

Based on your write up, it's not sounding good for the shooter. But I wasn't there, so I wouldn't consider my opinion fact.

Edit: Just read the first article. The article is even worse for the shooter than the write up in the OP.

It was caught on video inside the theater. Even though the vid quality isn’t great and the fact that the victim was standing over him (from the row in front with seat between them), it’s clear Reeves is trying to justify his actions after the fact. Dude shoulda been in the slammer three years ago.

            Here’s the video

Guy throws Reeves’ own popcorn at him, and quick draw McGraw blasts him in the same motion.

That video is crazy. Guy drew and fired incredibly fast after taking that popcorn

Supposedly, according to Reeves’ wife, the first thing he said after shooting the guy was “Oh no. Over popcorn”. Or something like that.

To be fair, the victim was also prepared to utilize some Hot Tamales and a big pretzel if his primary weapon failed.

P.S. I hate people who text during movies.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say throwing the guy's popcorn at him was a bad idea

Just proves what I’ve been thinking for awhile now. Some people are looking for an excuse to shoot somebody.

Shooting someone who throws popcorn at you should also prove to be a bad idea.

I’m confident it will be. To be fair though, the victim did obviously go on the offense when he came and stood over the defendant (which would explain why he had his hand on his pistol). Then he became the aggressor when he grabbed the guy’s popcorn and threw it on him.
