Where we used to live, every spring, during skunk mating season. Those **** things would get out in the back yard, which would be up wind of the house and spray up a storm. The smell gets into all of the fabric in the house, you can't get rid of the smell for over a month. Once is bad, but sure enough when the smell in the house is starting to fade, another would come along and fog the back yard up, once they have sprayed a nice thick cloud in the air, it's too late.
One year I decided I had had enough of the possums, skunks. I started shooting a trapping as many as I could. The first nine months, I trapped and killed around 75 possums. Then around 50 skunks. I found the skunk population took many years to rebound, the possums only took a couple of years to rebound. The coon population exploded, then they turned into a royal pain. I lost track of how many coons I killed. There was never a shortage of those things. I did not trap or see a possum for 2 years and probably five years on the skunks. So I stop thinking about them, just kept up on the coon killing. Eventually the skunks came back and went back to fogging the back yard and making the house rank for months. My wife was ******. So back to trapping and killing skunks.
Yea, when you shoot one, they spray a stream of their musk, like a fountain. It is so strong, that stuff could be used as a replacement for pepper spray.
