    Ballistics Question - .260 Remington

I'm not very ballistically smart, so I have a question for you guys who are. What does a .260 Remington compare to ballistically? From what I'm reading, it's a necked down .308, but I'm not really sure exactly what that means. I'm looking for a 25-06, and a guy is trying to sell me a Ruger MK-II Compact .260 Rem, and I was wondering if it's anything like the 25-06.

I'm not sure about the 260 but i'd actually have more considerations than ballistics. whats the availability of ammo seems to me it's easier to get 25-06 plus frankly i think 25-06 might just be my favorite round to shoot!

right now ANY ammo is hard to find in the common calibers, and the 260 isn't as common as 25-06. theyre both going to be more expensive to shoot than 308 or 30-06 or 270 perse.

What the necked down means is that remington took the 308 case, resized the opening in which the bullet is inserted down to be able to take the smaller diameter bullet of the 6.5mm. so now you have a round in between the 243 and the 308.

Will, just get it. It is a great gun for Texas whitetail. It falls between the 243 and 7mm-08. It is just a sweet shooting little gun.

Give me a minute though and I'll post up some ballistic comparisons.

6.5x55 would be the closest....both good rounds.

Pretty close to a 7mm-08 but the ammo is a little harder to find and probably a little more expensive. Academy doesn't stock the 260 but does the 7-08. Your bigger box stores (gander, bps, cabelas) and firearms stores are going to stock the 260 but it is still difficult to find sometimes.

you can just change the ending of the addy to whatever caliber you want and the corresponding chart will come up

You will like the .260. It is a short action, so you get all the benefits of that, low recoil and a flat trajectory.

While the 25-06 is a very popular and worthy cartridge, I very much prefer the .260 for the lesser recoil.

The ballistics with a 120 Gr bullet would be very close in my opinion, but don't have access to charts right now.

Here's a few conversations about it.

The ballistic coefficient is very high on the 6.5mm bullet, that's why it carries energy downrange and shoots flat for such a mild cartridge.

Ammo availability is NEVER a consideration for me when buying a firearm. I keep plenty on hand and truthfully don't shoot that much anyway.

wasn't this 260 designed for millitary use ? I thought I read something when it first came out about it replacing the 223.

                        hey,
                        Ive got a brillant idea...

buy/order 4-5 boxes of ammo at a time and you wont have to worry about what academy/wal-mart stocks...

                        (novel concept, eh )

No. You are probably thinking about the 6.5 Grendel which does share ballistics very close to the .260 Rem.

I have a .264 and ammo is hard to find. i found 40 rds of nosler from midway usa and then bought 100rds of nosler brass. i havent put it on paper yet, just shooting things out in the field, but it shoots awesome.
