Having walked a picket line for 40 days, only to see the union brass back a contract that was beneficial to them and worse for the workers than any other contract the company trotted out during the strike, I will try my best to never work in a union shop again.

So if a union painter makes 33$, what are the dues?

Growing up in a rtw state has left me with the impression that the unions are bad..you make more then they get their cut, tell you when, where and how to work (or not work) and tell you who to vote for

      Is that the case?

You are right in the fact that you will only be paid what you are willing to accept and frankly that’s all you deserve. However I will still negotiate my own way in lieu of letting a politically motivated group do it on my behalf.

I’ve never worked for a Union in my life, nor has my wife and we do pretty darn well for ourselves.

The quarterly dues are $109 dollars and then they take a 1.5 percent of what you make a week. So on a standard year you will pay a little over a hundred bucks a month in dues

No, RTW means that an employer can't take adverse employment action or refuse to hire based on union status.

Your thinking of the Employment at Will doctrine that states an employer is able to terminate an employee for any reason or no reason as long as it is not a discriminatory reason barring an employment contract. Like wise an employee is free to leave at any time.

And, the reasonable cost of the health benefits the union bargained for that I receive save me a lot of money also. The savings on that alone in one month would probably pay my dues for five to six months.
