Calculating beam size for a span

Hi there. Trying to figure out what size beam to use on an opening. Needs to span 24 feet. Has siding above it, not carrying a roof load or anything like that. Its in an old dance hall and trying to remove a few posts for the stage opening. If possible we would like to avoid a glue lam but if thats what we need, thats what we need.

    Thanks

Guy at metal depot told me a 6" c perlin would span 25'. So I bought 8", and it's fine in my barn, 12' between legs.

Good rule of thumb is 3 x purlin width. 8" is good for 24'. It actually will work for 25' max.

Glue lam beam. Rough it up with chainsaw and stain it.

You can always wrap a LVL beam to make it pretty

I called Fort Worth lumber, and they asked several questions, designed, built and delivered a 22’ load bearing beam to my house , for $325 total

Use 3 2x12 with two layers of plywood glued between each
