Report.
Took my oldest boy up last weekend to do a little work.
Movement is high.
Consumption is unacceptable, 1500 lbs. of protein in 3 weeks.
These girls need to calm down.
I'd posted earlier about finding the skull of a great buck that died next to the pen, sometime during the winter.
Followed by finding a second nice buck later this summer who also died near the pen last winter.
I have no idea what got them.
The draught years of 2011-12 with low recruitment seem to be evident in the pasture I hunt. Best I can tell, there are no mature bucks around.
Looks like a management year for my boys and I.
Here's the good news.
There is a great crop of young bucks.
Same group of bucks from last year and this year.
In 2 years, we might have something.
And a surprise pic of a Bull Elk.
We had a nice rain Friday evening, lost power from the strong winds.
But man, nice to have some campfire time.
Good luck everybody.

Just catching up...
Jethro- thanks for the report. Will pray for the team and their families.
DZ- great buck with incredible G2s. Congrats!
To the rest of the crew, best of luck. We're getting closer. Doesn't look like I'll make it back to the states this season but I'll certainly be living vicariously through you all.
By the way, did anyone make it to the TPWD/TAMU AE Wildlife Program in Memphis?

My brother had an elk show on his place a few years ago. Pictures but they never saw it in real time. This was east of Shamrock about 6 miles or so. From what I've been told, there is a breeding population in the eastern Panhandle.
As for the place I live and hunt on, only 2.5's and 3.5's on camera so far. No elk. I still haven't deer hunted, yet, but this colder weather has me considering. For now, still working on the dove population at the nearby feed lot. Lots of birds though I'm not sure if they're still around after the last few days.
Based on photos, we have more bucks than does. Not sure if this is a good thing. I expect to see lots of broken racks in the next month or two.Last edited by Heron; 10-16-2018, 09:55 PM.
