    Barndo shop build question

The builder finally completed the shop portion. Been a long process and a few miscommunications. Pretty big ones.

Anyhow looking it over i am seeing the welds that connect to the metal anchors are painted with the red oxidizer paint. However all other welds are not. He said i can paint it and he will knock 200 bucks off. My thought is what about the welds that are now covered with the sheet metal?

I also had over spray all over my concrete. So now i am going to have it all over my interior metal? Would not matter if i knew for sure i would be insulating it. However that just might not be in the budget.

I feel like this should of all been painted before putting the metal sheets on. Or am i over thinking and worrying about it?

Over thinking it.....he should have painted them as he went, but they are not exposed to the weather so should not be a problem.

That was my thought too. My FIL is very OCD and he went on and on how it wont last 10 years once the humidity starts the rust. Said welds rust and fail faster than the steel.

I am no metal worker so he got me worried. No way he can paint the top welds now with the sheet metal on so got concerned.

They will probably rust on you if you don’t treat them. 10 years might be a little over the top but I wouldn’t leave welds uncoated if it was me.

How would i treat the welds that are covered with sheet metal? Ask him to remove those sections, paint it and put those panels back on?

                This.

I would be more concerned about the windows leaking when it rains if he did not install them correctly.

None of the welds in my brand new barn were painted? What are you supposed to use????

The only welds that need to be painted are the ones directly exposed to the elements. Metal will rust, if you are away from the coast I wouldn’t worry about it too much. A little surface rust won’t compromise the structural integrity of the building. As far as the over spray on the slab he should have done a better job at using drop cloths. Nothing a pressure washer can’t fix though. All in all of those two things are the biggest issues I would say you have a pretty sound building. Looks great btw. What are the dimensions?

FIL is right by coast and super picky. Had me worried.

Building is 40x40 with 60x40 slab so we have the carport. Going up next is 20foot breezeway between the shop and house which will be 50x40. Shop will have a apartment upstairs on the front side. We will live in that while house in town remodeled and sold.

Thanks for the help guys. Now I can quit worrying and listening to the old crotchety man and get back to being happy with step one finished.

FWIW I’m by the coast too. I watch untreated welds in my garage rust all the time on my practice scrap. Some really bad and they’re out of the weather.

Might be why my perspective is different too.
