    Epic day in the salt

Had one of those days where things were just happening. It started really slow so after weeding through some small trout we made the call to run out to the end of the packery Chanel jetties to try for some red fish. We picked up one red and noticed a lot of birds working another 1/4 mile out since it was CALM me decided to check it out.

Over the next hour and a half we managed one king in the 38” range and half a dozen sharks up to three feet

The best part of it all though was that I hooked up to two tarpon the first hit near the boat and I got to watch him come up grab the bait and then listened to the drag scream as the line disappeared from my spool. Due to not being prepared we could not get things buttoned up and the big motor going in time to chase him and the line broke as I slowly tightened the drag to buy us some time.

We had one other brief hook up on a tarpon. Both appeared to be in the 50-60lb range. I am now that much more determined to get one to the boat

Dang, and I wasn't invited! Sounds like a great time!

We need to get together if we can when you and your Dad are at your lease up by Rotan!

Man that’s awesome! My uncle was offshore today and caught a white marlin. It always happens when I can’t be there lol

Yeah I believe you that it happened because I stopped in that same spot coming in from offshore yesterday. We caught several small sharks too and had a tarpon on. The kings had the bait balled up and would occasionally jump 5-6 feet out of the water. I was trolling around with my side scanner watching the show. There were several balls of bait, probably menhaden that were 30 feet across.

So true. But this sounds typical for Packery Channel this time of year

Yes we watched multiple kings clear the water. The thought had never crossed our mind to get anywhere outside of the bay and we did not have near the appropriate tackle but man the power of those tarpon is amazing

Day two in the books no tarpon today but we caught sharks and kings till we were to tired then ran in and got on some good trout.

My 7 year old hooked and landed his first king today. Pics to come.

Always be prepared to run out to the first rigs. All it takes is some ribbonfish and 2 hook kingfish leaders. Troll them on top.
