    Treated vs. Cedar Fence Pickets

About to build about 300' of 6' privacy fence and was wondering if using cedar pickets is worth the price(double) over using pressure treated pine pickets?

The post and runners will be treated and the entire fence will be stained with Ready Seal.

Yes, and ceder runners and post are too. Metal post even better

That depends, is it a long term house or a short term house for you? If less than 5 years I would use treated, if more than that I would use Cedar.

If long term and you had termites. Put pave stones under the run of fence. Had to do that in Dallas.

I'd go cedar, preferably from a local lumber yard. My dad fenced in a half acre with pine pickets from Lowe's and just about every picket has warped. Supposedly Home Depot has better wood but not quite as good as a real lumberyard.

I also had bad luck with treated lumber warping and twisting.

My privacy fence is 23 years old made of Cedar. I have three horizontal runners My neighbors have installed treated and both have warped badly and both have had to replace their fences.

Cedar is the better deal long term.

Cedar and use galvanized nails. personally, I'd use cedar runners with metal posts too... I'll be replacing the back yard fence (pool fence) at our house in the next year or so... previous owner used treated pine pickets and regular old nails... some of the nails have rusted almost in two, and a lot of the pickets have bowed, twisted, and even in a couple cases popped right off the runners. I'll go back in with metal posts, ceder everywhere else, even the "rot" board at the ground will be cedar.

You aren’t replacing an existing fence, are you??? I’m looking for weathered 1x6 pickets for a project at my house.

No, but keep an eye out on FB marketplace or Craigslist. Saw some there while looking for deals.

Good call on the galvanized nails, I'd take it a step further and get the ring shanks so they won't back out over time.

I do fencing. . .CEDAR all the way. The treated will warp and split. The cedar will not. If you do cedar runners as well, the fence will last 12-15 years with metal poles. Do not use NAILS, use deckmate screws.
