    Help Understanding a Beatitude

The wife and I have been trying to get in a habit of reading the bible and praying together every morning. We started a really cool book I'm sure some of you are familiar with called My Utmost For His Highest by Oswald Chambers. This mornings reading talked about the beatitudes and when we read them, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven, started an interesting conversation between us about what this one really meant. We had a sermon on them last year but I forgot how brother Jon presented it. So I was wondering, what does this one mean to you.

To me it means "poor in spirit" = "not proud or self-reliant" from a spiritual perspective. I realize I have nothing to offer spiritually and acknowledge that I have to rely on Christ's saving grace.

Mike is on the right track.
Poor in spirit is realizing that we are totally unable to provide salvation for ourselves through the law. Read John 14:6 .

          This one is tough

Being humble basically, giving all credit to our creator.
The tough part is knowing Christ died for you, called you to be his child, and placed you in a country where you're only limit is how hard your willing to work, And still remain humble.
We are indeed special, preferred by our creator, and extremely blessed.
It's all about balance self esteem vs humility without either we will fail.

Here is an excerpt from one of the commentaries that I use a lot from my e-Sword Bible Study program. I think It defines this Be-Attitude very well and with clarity... These are the rules for your attitude of being...

              ...
Blessed are the poor in spirit—the humble—for theirs is the kingdom. Barclay calls this "the supreme blessedness." The Greek word makarios, which is translated "blessed," is difficult to translate into English. It incorporates the meaning of wholeness, of joy, of well-being, of a holistic peace expressed by the Hebrew word shalom. The word describes a condition of inner satisfaction expressed by Jesus in Joh_14:27 : "My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you" (KJV). The poor in spirit are those who, in absolute poverty of spirit, are solely dependent upon God. Such persons have no confidence in their own successes or achievements, for they enjoy the gift of God's acceptance and fellowship.

Oh and KUDO's to you for stepping up to be the spiritual leader for your family. If men accepted this responsibility more and made it a priority, our world would be a LOT better off and there'd be an awakening like we have never seen!

                God bless you sir.
