They are around, just have to look. They only eat harvester ants. I’ll post some pics, did some environmental work lately.

Last pic you can see the defense mechanism, only seen it once, they shoot blood out of their eyes.

This was a little guy I caught, over a month ago, seen him or her every time I pass by, going on 6 weeks now.

so what has happened to them over the years?

This is what I've heard and I hope it true. Fire ants have taken over most red ants territories. Horn toads eat red ants but do not eat fire ants.
Why do I hope this it's true?
Back in the 60s when I was a kid in West Texas we used to blow horny toads up with firecrackers just to see the red ants in their stomach.
