    Need some tree help

I have one tree that has always been a little smaller and not as healthy looking as the other. I went on vacation and came back a week later and it looks like it almost completely dead. Both trees are the same age. Any ideas besides water it?

    Thanks

    Mike

Flood it, and I bet you'll have fireants by the millions.
I planted 21 trees, and when one looked like that, I would flood it and fireants had taken over the rootball.
    Kill the fireants.

As a Forester, I predict that tree will soon be a stump.

Just guessing here but when you planted it did you spread the roots out or did you plant it withe the roots in a ball? I’ve seen trees that were planted with there roots balled up and it eventually strangled itself.

I didn't plant it, they were planted when the house was built.

I watered it for about 30mins straight from the hose and never noticed any fire ants.

I was told once that it takes a year for a tree to die, they just don't up in die in month like a bush. Don;t know if its true or not. Had a bradford pear that did that. If the lower and middle branches just break/snap with no life in center its done.

Froggy was a forester in another life.

In my unprofesional opinion, I would cut it down, It looks like a Bradford Pear, and I don't like the round shape; prefer a natural form tree/limbs. It also looks like a large, mature tree would shade out the grass.

Scrap a few of the tree limbs with a knife and see if the limbs are still green and flexible. If they are, hit up home depot and get some fertilizer spikes for trees. Put those in the ground around it. You can also add 4-5 bags of compost (along with fertilizer spikes) and spread it in the grass around the tree and then water good in the morning and evening when temps are cooler. If your limbs are brown and dead, cut the tree down cause its gone. Good luck and maybe this last ditch effort will help it

You can likely bring it back with Superthrive. And when you water it, it has to be a trickle for a long period of time (around 5 hrs). Then dont water again until the top 3 inches of soil are dry.

Also make sure the root flare is exposed. It may be planted too deep, and the grass growing right up to the trunk isn't helping. Remove the grass and dirt ant the base of the trunk until you can see the top of roots that lead away from the trunk.
