I just don't understand why it matters if it is a rat snake, a chicken snake, a gopher snake, a garter snake, a striped snake, or a spotted snake if it is not venomous.

All kidding aside, there are only 4 venomous snakes in Texas; Rattlesnakes, Water Moccasins, Copperheads, and Coral Snakes. The ONLY one that may sometimes be slightly difficult to ID is the water moccasin, and that would be when it is alive and not easy to get a good look at his head, eyes, tail, and fangs. Once it's dead, it is easy to check to see if he has fangs.
ALL outdoorsmen SHOULD be able to, no... NEED to be able to ID the venomous snakes

There are a gillion charts/pictures IDing snakes, and we still get them wrong, so "what difference, at this point, does it matter?"
