At this point, what difference does it make?

Was not really picking on you.

I just don't understand why it matters if it is a rat snake, a chicken snake, a gopher snake, a garter snake, a striped snake, or a spotted snake if it is not venomous .

I did not know if it was venomous or not, that's why I asked! I saw the thread on copperheads hanging out are oaks to feed off the cicadas, and my kids play out there. Just wanted to make sure my kids didn't get bit and kill any snakes.

All kidding aside, there are only 4 venomous snakes in Texas; Rattlesnakes, Water Moccasins, Copperheads, and Coral Snakes. The ONLY one that may sometimes be slightly difficult to ID is the water moccasin, and that would be when it is alive and not easy to get a good look at his head, eyes, tail, and fangs. Once it's dead, it is easy to check to see if he has fangs.

ALL outdoorsmen SHOULD be able to, no... NEED to be able to ID the venomous snakes

We post the same pictures over and over, and folks ID them and mis-ID them, and we STILL don't get edumicated. A picture of this same snake will be posted within a month asking for an ID.

There are a gillion charts/pictures IDing snakes, and we still get them wrong, so "what difference, at this point, does it matter?"
