    Bayhouse where and why

Figured i could start a little discussion on if you were to get a bayhouse or house used mainly for fishing/hunting where and why? I’d love to have one in port o Connor due to the feel of the town and amazing fishing and duck hunting possibilities. The down side is it being a 3 hr drive from Houston. And with that being said Galveston is more reasonable but would have to give up the duck hunting for the most part and this would also be a better option as far as convincing the boss lady. What would be your spot?

Sargent, TX. I'd have a house there but I live 15 minutes away.

I'd probably pick Sargent as well. POC is cool, but it is an absolute mad house. I won't even fish there anymore.

Yes sir, if you're not into the big going out nightlife etc. This is a great town good fishing easy access to Matagorda Bay small beaches the downside and it's not kept up as well as other beaches but it's rarely crowded.
We have a good cop that patrols when he can. Still a good mix of civilization/don't act stupid and you can do what you want kind of place. (They just recently got a dollar general) before that all shopping was half hour drive or the necessities the gas station carried
Good duck hunting in the area
Good folks in this small town
Minimal crime, you hear people gripe about gas cans etc getting stolen and occasional house getting broken into but nothing compared to bigger places like Galveston. I'd look for a place next to someone that lives there full time. People watch out for eachother

Downside is taxes run about 4k a year average for a house on the water but I know other places are higher I'm sure.
Volunteer fire department but understaffed for a life threatening emergency you don't want to be there. With response time.
New bridge is going in at the beach. Pro for buying as wont have to wait at swing bridge but I like the old bridge.new pier on the beach but it's pretty short. They are working on improvements but things move slow in this town.

I can get there in hr and 45 minutes-2hrs from Tomball depending on speed, pulling boat etc.

That is why we bought in Seadrift. I’m two blocks from the bay and boat ramp plus I’m only 17 minutes from Froggies in POC. I’m not a big city guy and don’t care for crowds at all so our little township is perfect plus, property and taxes (because of property values) are 1/4 of that in POC.

Indianola would be agreat place but it is becoming more amd more popular every year. Fishins is fantastic there and you are not far from POC, Port Lavaca, Rockport and so on.

I will add that one can find (have to look for them and don’t be afraid to make a stupid low offer like 50% of asking) a lot (50-60’x150’) with water, sewer, and electric already on the place for $20-k! Some are asking stupid money for lots like ours. I lowballed the crud out of them (43%) and we agreed on 50% of original asking. In four years I will be selling my homestead in Bryan and building a retirement bungalow on our lot. If you get creative, one can get a smoking good deal just don’t get in a hurry (took us three years) and don’t be afraid to walk away if the seller doesn’t agree to YOUR terms!

If you are looking for close to Houston you may try around High Island. Not to far from the wildlife refuge.

Anywhere but Port O'Connor...grew up fishing there and did so for 50 years but it's no sleepy fishing village anymore...as has been said here, it really is a mad house.

Or bay house was in Port Alto but Carla got it so we put a trailer house on the slab where the house was and a tornado spawned by Hurricane Beulah got the trailer so we were done with bay homes.

I've always wanted a house in Port Mansfield and might still get one there but it's a 4 hour drive for me, 4.5 if pulling the boat.

I like Seadrift and Indianola, Magnolia Beach, Alamo Beach those are good choices too, but the SE wind if blowing will wear you out in a boat trying to get somewhere.

Palacios is good but again you're on the wrong end of West Matagorda Bay and it can get really rough and unforgiving if it's blowing.

grew up with 2 places in matagorda. It was nothing to fish holiday weekends during the summer. Now I refuse to try and fish on the weekends. Im actually headed there tomorrow but more for a family deal than fishin. I am taking the boat but not even leaving montgomery county till after noon.

We looked at sargent for 2 years cause I had 2 buddies with places there. Ended up buying something on a lake. No hurricanes!

I think what kills POC is the one road in and out and one ramp thats worth a crap. If they added another ramp with good parking that would help.
