Quick question for those who have been down range the last few years.

The young man we helped raise is a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps and looking for a knife to where on his body armor he can quickly access and use as a CQB weapon. What do those who have been there the last few years suggest?

Haven't been there, but my son was. He carried the Benchmade Infidel. He subsequently bought me the mini version that I carry on duty daily. Double edge OTF. Quality is great and has served me well for several years.

Plus, for those deployed, I love the name of "Infidel".

Benchmade CQB tool. Buy the set with the practice blade and learn how to use it.

Every LT, private, etc. wants to carry a kabar or jackhawk 9000 until they actually patrol with one, realistically, he’ll open MREs with it more than anything.

I always carried benchmade griptillians, spydercos, whatever was free.

If going to the desert I do not recommend the Infidel. in fact in 2010 when we called Benchmade from Afghanistan They didn't recommend it either because the dust clogged up the action.

No to be honest he's probably thinking some honker of a knife AND if he buy's one it'll never get used. Now i don't mean he won't use it on bad guys i mean it'll weight too much and be put in a sea bag. Not to mention some company commander is going to tell him he looks ridiculous and to take it off.

But if he wants a great knife send him the link above. Benchmade sent us a bunch of these in Afghanistan. Stupid sharp and lightweight. And if he can sharpen a knife he can get it sharper.

All the new guys want a big knife when they first get in. I bought two, one was a 7.5" Tanto from Grayman knives and the other their Seunami it has like a 4" blade. Carried the tanto once and the little one the rest of the time.

By no means am I the end all be all just sharing my experience. Let me know if you have any questions.

This. No need for some Rambo knife. People will just laugh at him for being a gear queer. Especially being a cherry Lt. I carried a SOG trident while I was over there. Can’t complain about t at all. Sharpened back up nice after it was being used to cut open tuna cans and whatnot.
Like the other poster stated above. It’s main job will be cutting open mail and MREs. Lol

Yeah that's funny. I have a friend that carries three blades and a handgun for self defense. I tell him if they get that close he should be able to club them with his empty gun.

I'm just going to get him one before his next field exercise so I need to make a decision soon.

has he graduated tbs and all that? Is he with his unit? if so what unit?

I ask because if he is still at TBS he doesn't really want a big knife on his gear there. Everyone from prior enlisted guys to the instructors will make it known how much they don't like it.

He's halfway through TBS now. I have mentioned to him about big blades. He's carrying a 240 and lots of ammo. He doesn't need any more weight. [emoji16]

Tell him to carry that big girl and dont be afraid to treat her like the .... she is. Its metal treat it that way. The big knife at TBS should be avoided. I carried the one knife most of the time but honestly the vast majority of the time i carried and used a buck prince for most every day work. check out the bench made link in my first knife. Its a good choice for all around and would be a great gift.

This is what I sent to my son in law a few years ago. He really liked it and it fit in the webbing on his vest.
