Well...... looks like we are without a boat for at least half the trip.... seems to be a short in my buddies ignition and it isn’t getting connection to turn over. Only does it every so often.

Have you tried to jumper straight to the starter from a battery (bypass the cable on the boat)? I've had a couple boats do what you are describing and the cable from the battery to the motor had worn thru from years of rubbing fiberglass and saltwater exposure. Might be worth a try if you haven't. Good luck
