    Broadhead Testing

Shot this hog the other night (6.8) and went back the next morning to test some broadheads. I’ve been shooting Slick Trick Magnums for many years. Never been a big fan of mechanical for obvious reasons but picked up some knockoff Rage Hypodermics to try. Shot a medium sized hog with the knockoff broadhead and was very impressed with the blood trail. My only concern was how it would penetrate on a good sized boar thus the test. I estimated this hog to be in the 175# range with a fairly solid shield. 400 grain arrow at 288 fps @ 20 yards.

    Broadheads tested:
Slick Tick Vipertrick (Left Arrow) 14” Penetration
Slick Trick Magnum (Center Arrow) 12” Penatration
Rage Hypodermic knockoff (Right Arrow) 6.5” Penetration

As expected the cut on contact Vipertrick performed the best with the broadhead just exiting the opposite side. The Magnum stopped at the opposite side shield. The Rage knockoff was disappointing. I estimated it would penetrate the least but I expected a little more and it was placed furthest back from the shoulder where the shield is slightly thinner. Blades were sharp as I sharpened them before the test. It may have performed better if the hog was standing and I slipped it in low behind the shoulder in the heart area. I will continue to test the knockoffs on small to medium sized hogs but I think I need a little more punch and may have to go up in poundage to be effective on larger boars. Would probably be a good head for deer.

You want some big cuts plus penetration, plus fly like darts, try some Ramcats. 125 grain is 1 3/8" cut!

Seems like there would be too many variables to do that.. what if one hit a bone? Maybe not but that's just my thinking..

Add in a field tip next time.

              Here’s a test from Thursday.

              Gravedigger Hybrid.

              40 feet of penetration. [emoji4]

Yep, pretty easy to penetrate when they don’t have a shield. This was only a 370 grain arrow at 280 FPS.

Disregard double post. Up in the tree with intermittent signal.
