    Looking for Inexpensive Computer

My oldest son wants his own computer for his 9th birthday which is in a few weeks. I would like to find him something and since you guys are so smart, where is the best place to pick up a comuter for a good price. He does not need much......just something to surf the internet and play a simple game or two on.

Check your local pawn shops. They will normally have one or two there that are pretty inexpensive.

Check if you have a Good Will computer store in your area.

How soon are you looking to get one? I am upgrading my daughter's machine in the next week or two. You can have her old one if we can figure out TBH express or something. She uses it for the internet, not a super computer by any means but seems to work well with DSL. Let me know if you're interested.

I'll get busy on my daughter's, I have the machine just haven't loaded it for her. Shouldn't be a problem having it available by then need to figure out shipping. I get a 75% discount at Fedex if we can't find TBH express.

You could always build him one dirt cheap if all he is going to do is surf the web waves and play small games. If you need help, just holler.

                    SupaSlam,
Thanks. That's a good idea. If it does not work out with Tx hombre, I might take you up on that offer for help. I don't know much about the insides of a computer.

For web surfing the microprocessor speed and size of the hard disk drive are not terribly important. More important would be how much memory is installed (memory is cheap), a stable OS and a nice display (flat panel). Be sure to install Mozilla Firefox as a web browser instead of Internet Explorer and you'll be way ahead not getting attacked by internet 'nasties'. I have an older machine gathering dust in our extra bedroom, but if you can get one from these fine folks in Texas it would be easier.

Watch craigslist.com for a used flat panel monitor in your area, cheap.

Computer shops usually have trade ins that are slightly outdated but cheap. If you can't get one from the TxHombre, it might be worth checking them out. Good luck!

I've got a few laying around, everything from PII 450 machines up to Athlon 1800+. If you end up in San Antonio you're more than welcome to most of them no charge. I'm an IT guy so have tons of stuff laying around. Also have lots of hard drives and memory and such if you just want to upgrade the other one.

We recently moved our computer to the extra bedroom setup as a home office for my wife, and got a Samsung LCD flat display and a new, black keyboard and it's "almost" like she got a new computer. Here's a bunch of them on amazon.com.
