Love my '13 ecoboost but only avg 16mpg overall and about 11 or 12 pulling my boat. I wouldn't opt for the diesel just because of the DEF.

Went to Nashville and back in my 2016 F-150 and got 20.2 mpg. Not bad for the 5.0. We were loaded pretty good.

The 5.0 and the 3.5 are about equal in mileage unloaded. On flat terrain highway towing, I wouldn’t be surprised if the 5.0 did a little better than the 3.5. The 3.5 won’t work as hard towing as it’s torque curve comes on at a much lower RPM than the 5.0, and would certainly be a benefit in stop and go traffic or hilly terrain. It’s cool that ford finally put a diesel in a half ton, but the premium in price makes it hard to justify purchasing it.
