My son has a couple times. It's funny the different personalities that they have. Several years ago he raised seven of them from little striped pigs until they reached 80/100 lb. Most of them got pretty tame but one boar had to be tapped upside his head evrry time my son went into the pen to feed.

He's got a sow in an old dog kennel right now that he's had for a while. Got her as a baby too, but she weighs around 300 now. He can open the pen and she won't come out, comes up to the gate to be scratched and petted. She still raises her hackles when a stranger comes around though.

They aren't game animals, so why is it illegal ?

Cannot transport or keep LIVE feral swine unless you are taking it to a licensed Hog Buying Station or Licensed Hunting Preserve. You can keep it for up to a week before taking it to an approved buyer, but they must stay in the truck/trailer they were transported in.

In that case they are supposed to be properly quarantined and disease tested

The first sentence is not correct.

                  Requirements for Feeding Feral Swine
Feral swine are to only be fed until transportation
is arranged for delivery to slaughter or a holding
facility, or for fattening on the premise of origin for
                  personal consumption
                  . To prevent potential disease
                  transmission, practice good biosecurity.

TAHC regulations apply if they are to be transported from their original capture place

When do the TAHC regulations apply?
The TAHC’s regulations apply when LIVE feral swine are
to be moved from the premises where they were trapped
or captured. While awaiting transport to slaughter or a
holding facility, the feral swine may be held in escape
proof pens on the premise of origin, or when an escapeproof
cage on the vehicle or trailer that transported
them from their original premise, or held within the
transport trailer itself for as long as 7 days.

We caught a baby one years ago on the Savannah Ricer in Ga. Friend of mine was a capt for a guy that lived in Wexford Plantation on Hilton Head Island and raised it for about 6 months. Wexford Plantation is one of HHI top $$$$ plantation. Michael Jordan, Robin Givens and other celebs have / had houses there. The piglet made the local Paper here when they gave it to a rescue group. Was getting to big to handle in the plantation.

Have another friend who got one and raised it. The thing thought it was Minature Mule. It followed the mule everywhere

They eat a lot and grow really slow. Depends how big you want them when you process them.

What about proper quarantine and disease testing? Nobody is doing that are they? The OP asked about taking one home and giving it to the neighbor. You can't legally do that. Folks do it all the time though.

I don't give a hoot what anyone does, just enlightening those that may be unknowingly breaking the rules.

Yep. If you are raising for meat, you'll get a lot more yield from a domestic hog

The situations I'm talking about you don't have to quarantine and test them.

This lil guy showed up a month ago and hangs out with our bulls. You can get within 15-20 yards of him but he will hide behind the bulls. Follows them to their feed pens and just hangs out all day with them.
